Get Your Garage Ready for Winter
Tuesday, January 09, 2018
If you suffer from cold winters where you live, you will know that the freezing temperatures and water can cause a lot of problems to your home. That is why it is so important to make sure your home is ready for the winter each year. However, do you also make sure your garage is also winter proof? There can be as much damage to your garage as your home, and it can cost a lot to fix.
Protecting from Cold Air
Although having somewhere cold can be a good thing when you need to keep your vegetables or your beer cold, you won’t want it to be that cold in the winter, or you will start to find things in your garage getting damaged. One way that you can prevent this is to seal the windows, doors and of course the garage door from drafts. You can do this by adding draft proof strips to the edges of the windows and doors. There are also strips that you can attach to the bottom of the door. They allow the door to open while keeping the draft out.
Insulation
Your home is usually well insulated against cold temperatures. However, the same might not be true about your garage. Whether your garage is attached to your home or not, it is still important that you add adequate insulation to the walls and roof areas. The options you have depend on the way your garage is constructed. If you have brick construction, then an insulated plasterboard is adequate to keep the temperature up. If you have a metal garage, then you may also need an additional layer of insulation material in between the plasterboard and walls. The garage door will be strong enough to keep people out, but it won’t be able to keep out the cold. You can buy garage doors that are double lined; they help to insulate the garage door and prevent frost.
Water Damage
One thing you certainly don't want is your nice new car from Eastern Mini getting damaged by water that has passed through contaminants such as asbestos roof tiles while it’s in the garage. For that reason, you need to make sure that there are no holes in the roof or walls that can let the rain or snow come in. If you do find any holes, you can try to patch them up with expanding spray foam, or you can repair them if there is time before winter. You should also check to see if the seal at the bottom of the garage door is still in good condition. In windy weather, you can get water blown under the door and into the garage. You can usually replace the seal on the garage door to make it watertight again.
Having your car safe and protected from the elements helps to ensure that it won’t get damaged by the weather. Having a weatherproof garage also allows you to keep other things in your garage if you need to do so.
